Ancillary Radiation Training

INTENDED AUDIENCE: House-keeping staff, animal caretakers, Facilities personnel, UCPD, UCFD, etc.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This training is required for Non-Laboratory Workers annually who may be required to enter a radioactive materials laboratory as part of their routine duties at the University of Connecticut

Laser Safety (HuskyCT)

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The laser safety on-line training course is required for all Class 3b or Class 4 laser users including the Primary Laser Researcher or laser supervisor. Questions regarding training applicability should be directed to Amy Courchesne (860-486-5399) More detail is provided upon accessing the HuskyCT training.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The laser safety training reviews the basic principles of laser safety including the identification, evaluation, and control of potential hazards. Some of the principles included in the laser safety on-line course are the following:

  • an introduction to laser safety.
  • exposure limits.
  • laser registration and permits.
  • hazards and safety requirements.
  • laser classifications.
  • laser warning signs.
  • emergency procedures.

Laser Safety Lab Based Training Checklist

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The laser safety lab-based training is considered part of the laser user initial training requirements and must be completed prior to work with Class 3B or Class 4 lasers or working in a class 3B or 4 laboratory.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The laser safety lab-based training includes a review of the laser safety policies and procedures specific to the Class 3B or Class 4 laser users and non-users. The training is conducted in the laser laboratory by the primary laser researcher (laser supervisor). The signed completed form must be mailed to Environmental Health & Safety U-4097. Radiation Safety (Refresher)

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The radiation safety refresher course applies to the following: Users: The refresher training is required for radioactive materials users who have completed the initial training. The refresher training class will be conducted on-site with laboratory personnel and scheduled through the Radiation Safety Office. Users are required to attend one refresher training session prior to each protocol renewal. The Radiation Safety Office will inform the Licensed Investigator when refresher training is needed for laboratory personnel. This course does not apply to non-users working in a radioactive materials laboratory.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: User Refresher Training: This course includes a review of pertinent radiation safety policies and procedures, information, and program updates and changes and varies on an annual basis. Non-Laboratory Workers: This course includes an overview of the University of Connecticut radiation safety program, basic radiation principles, and radiation safety practices and information specific to job-related duties. Radiation Safety for Non-Users (Initial)

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This course is required for all individuals who work in a radioactive materials laboratory but do not handle radioactive materials. Such individuals are classified as "non-users" and are required to attend this course prior to working in a radioactive materials laboratory, or enter a radioactive materials laboratory un-escorted. This course does not apply to x-ray or laser laboratories or non- laboratory workers. Radiation Safety for Users (Initial)

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This course is required for all individuals who work directly with radioactive materials in a laboratory. Such individuals are classified as "users" and are required to attend this course prior to working in a radioactive materials laboratory. This course does not apply to x-ray or laser laboratories or non- laboratory workers. Questions regarding training applicability should be directed to the Radiation Safety Officer, Amy Courchesne (860-486-5399)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course covers the University of Connecticut Radiation Safety Program. Topics include: radiation protection principles, signs and labels, security, emergency procedures, radionuclide materials ordering process (Kuali), handling of radioactive material, storage, waste, security, documentation, and monitoring policies and procedures required for users of radioactive materials. Radiation Safety Lab Based Training Checklist

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The radiation safety lab-based training is required for all users and non-users in radioactive materials laboratories prior to working in the laboratory. This training is not applicable to x-ray equipment or laser users.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The radiation safety lab-based training includes a review of the radiation safety policies and procedures specific to the radioactive materials laboratory the individual will be working in. The lab-based training is considered part of the initial training required by Radiation Safety. The training is conducted in the radioactive materials laboratory by the Licensed Investigator. X-Ray Safety Lab Based Training Checklist

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The x-ray safety lab-based training must be completed prior to work with x-ray diffraction or spectrographic equipment, or working in an analytical x-ray equipment laboratory.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The x-ray safety lab-based training includes a review of the x-ray safety policies and procedures specific to the analytical x-ray equipment users and non-users. The training is conducted in the x-ray laboratory by the x-ray equipment supervisor. The signed completed forms must be mailed to Environmental Health & Safety U-4097. X-Ray Safety Training (HuskyCT)

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The x-ray safety on-line training course is required for all individuals who plan to use x-ray diffraction or spectrographic equipment prior to working with the equipment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The x-ray safety on-line course includes: identification of radiation hazards associated with the use of the x-ray equipment; significance of the various radiation warning, safety devices and interlocks incorporated into the equipment, or the reasons they have not been installed on certain pieces of equipment and the extra precautions required in such cases; proper operating procedures for the equipment; recognition of the symptoms of an acute localized exposure; and proper procedures for reporting an actual or suspected exposure.
