Laboratory Safety Training Policy

I. Purpose

The purpose of this University Policy is to mandate training in Laboratory Safety. 

II. Scope

This policy applies to all University personnel and students who work in research or service laboratories at the main and regional campuses. 

III. Description

The following items are addressed by this policy:

  1. Each Principal Investigator or Laboratory Supervisor shall provide employees and students who work in research or service laboratories with specific information and training regarding the hazards of chemicals present in their work area prior to initiating work. 
  2. Mandatory general training and testing will be administered by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS). New hires must complete the next available training session offered by DEHS. Records of completion and test results will be maintained by DEHS. 
  3. Annual refresher training will be required for all employees. Refresher training may also be mandated following an unsatisfactory laboratory inspection report or for failure to correct a deficiency found during a previous inspection.
