Purpose
This policy serves to meet, in part, University of Connecticut efforts to comply with the USA PATRIOT Act (HR 3162), the "Possession, Use and Transfer of Select Agents and Toxins" (42 CFR 73) and the "Agricultural Bioterrorism Protection Act of 2002; Possession, Use and Transfer of Biological Agents and Toxins" (7 CFR Part 331 and 9 CFR Part 121).
Scope
- This policy applies to all academic departments
at the Storrs and regional campuses that host or sponsor visiting investigators,
or visiting scientists/scholars.
Description of Requirements
- University of Connecticut Department Heads and/or Investigators (host/sponsor) are required to notify Biological Safety, in writing, when laboratory activity involving biological materials will be conducted by faculty/scientists, scholars, students or other individuals not employed or enrolled in University of Connecticut programs.
- The written notification should include the full name, social security, passport, visa or other traceable identification number, country of origin, sponsor/host, contact telephone number, home address, place of employment (if applicable), local address, nature of visit and length of stay. The notification should indicate if research materials will accompany or be shipped by the visitor when he/she leaves the University.
- The host/sponsoring investigator is responsible for the research conduct of the visiting investigator/scientist/scholar, including assuring that the investigator fulfills any University training requirements/recommendations.
