Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure all biological research activities in University of Connecticut facilities are supervised with oversight by IBC.
Scope
- This policy applies to academic departments
at the Storrs and regional campuses.
Description of Requirements
- The University is prohibited from conducting BSL4/BL4 (Biological Safety Level 4) research or knowingly possessing BSL4/BL4 agents. The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) will not allow BSL2/BL2 (Biological Safety Level 2) or BSL3/BL3 (Biological Safety Level 3) research projects to remain active when Principal Investigators (PI) go on sabbatical or extended leave of greater than one month, unless the PI assigns/designates a Responsible Investigator (RI) to oversee the research.
- The RI will have the same authority and responsibilities as the PI for the health and safety of the laboratory personnel and the administration and conduct of BSL2 and/or BSL3 activities.
- The BAUR form should reflect the appointment and/or necessary contact information for the RI.
